So here it is, my entry for the Observer/Random House Graphic Short Story Prize, a version of the Folk Song/Story John Barleycorn. The idea was to work with ideas from English folklore, but deal with them in a contemporary way, here with influences from Mervyn Peake, Sergio Leone and Tom Waits. Hand in over and new projects can commence. Heres the begginings of a little something for the portfolio, character designs for Mervyn Peake's Boy in Darkness. A criminally undervalued short story, it follows a young heir to a castle who leaves under the pressure of his sucession, and enters a land controlled by the Lamb, a creature who changes men into the beasts inside their hearts. The designs above are for Hyena and Goat, half men half animals who worship and work for the lamb...

Nuggle

Even though my final hand in looms ever closer I can't help but draw. This time its a Nuggle, a mythical Horse spirit from Orkney that tempts travellers onto its back and then dives into the water, drowning the rider. It features as part of a short story I'm constantly telling myself I will finish, although after this it might mutate into a graphic novel...

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Second in my series of SF book covers is Philip K Dick's masterpiece, the first SF book I would send anyone doubting the genre to. Famously adapted into Blade Runner, which less famously cut most of the philosophical elements. My cover features the empathy box at the centre of the Mercerisim religion, one of the big cuts in the film adaptation. Not sure which cover is gonna come next, have a few ideas floating around, but am open to suggestions, so feel free!

So here are a few shots of the exhibition, nothing much to say about them, although the seed of taking pictures, exhibiting those pictures, taking pictures of the exhibition, exhibiting those pictures, taking pictures of the exhibition... and so on in that fashion has been planted in my mind, perhaps by a particularly mischievous spectre of Baudrillaird. An idea to save for when I can afford to be too clever for my own good.

Here are a couple of images from my upcoming exhibition at the Student Puppetry Festival, Just sent off for the prints and am expectantly awaiting their arrival. Heres hoping the postman doesnt mash them through our tiny letterbox...

The exhibiton will be on Tuesday the 17th of March, in Studio 2 At the Central School of Speech and Drama in Swiss Cottage.
